I am a Catholic who participated in Hijabi for a Day at Union. First of all, for me, I did not see any coniflct or disrespect in the timing of the event. Nothing about what I do or was taught to do on this day was affected by participating and wearing a hijab. Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, but is a day of fast and abstinence. I could fast during the day, abstain from eating meat, go to church and receive ashes while still participating in the Hijabi for a Day event. The Hijabi for a Day event was the most incredible event I have been a part of at Union in the past 5 years. I was really impressed with the large numbers of people who participated from all faith backgrounds, and with the reflection discussion after the (vegetarian) dinner. I felt the purpose of the event was to raise awareness and to celebrate our diversity and acceptance of all people. To me, this in no way coniflcts with Ash Wednesday. I don't consider the event to be a celebration of Muslim faith that was insensitively or neglectfully planned on a Christian holy day. I consider it to be an event that encouraged people to accept others despite what they wear or how they worship; I think will ultimately help people better respect Catholics when we have ashes on our foreheads.Also, why is every single comment anonymous?
